Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, INDIA


The Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is one of the most important bird sanctuaries located close to the Nawabganj town in the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. The sanctuary is known as the bird watcher's paradise in India. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 45 km from the highway connecting Kanpur and Lucknow. Rambling over an area of 2.246 sq. km, the place is beautifully lined with many different trees and shrubs. Both local as well as traveling birds are found in abundance in the sanctuary. The birds help a lot to maintain the biological equilibrium of the place. The migratory birds that flock the sanctuary come from all over the world including countries like Siberia, Europe, and Tibet etc.

Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary has about 250 species of drifting and local birds. The migrant birds can be seen between the months of November and February. The sanctuary also has a beautiful lake in its vicinity. Some of the birds that can be spotted easily in the sanctuary include Pintail, Red Crested Pochard, Common Teal, Mallard, Brahmini Duck, Greylag Goose, Cotton Teal, and gadwall, Shoveller, Coot and Wigeon.

Some of the colorful species of birds that can be seen in the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary include Sarus Crane, Painted Stork, Stopwill, Black Ibis, Whistling Teal, Dabchick, White Ibis, White necked Stork, Spoon Bill, Open Billed Stork, Black Necked Stork, Purple Moorhen, Broze Winged Jacana, Pheasant Tailed jacana, White Breasted Water Hen, Moorhen, Cormorant Darter, Egret, and Pond Heron.

Some other birds making the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary more vibrant include Lapwing, Koel, Hawk Eagle, Stone Curlew, Night Jar, Kingfisher, Dove, Tern Vulture, King Crow, Hoopoe, Drongo, Bee Eater, Muniya, Brain Fever Bird, Indian Roller, Parakeet, Finch, Comb Duck, Peacock, Babbler, Barbet and Pigeon.

You can also delight yourself by observing gaiety little fish like Sindhi, Saul, Katla, Kavai, and Mangur swimming in the lake. The sanctuary is also a dwelling place of numerous reptiles especially snakes. Viper, Rat snake, Water Snake, Krait and Cobra are some of the poisonous snakes that can be spotted at numerous places in the sanctuary. The Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary also has a deer park in its vicinity. Barking Deer and Spotted deer are the common species of deer found at the place. The verdant sanctuary offers enchanting and picturesque settings for the photographers. Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary has a number of comfortable and budget hotels for the convenience of the modest traveler. Small bistros and coffee bars available at the place add to the delight of tourists.
